Early Stage Financing

Many entrepreneurs ask “Where can I get early stage funding to start my business?”. Commercialization BC has compiled a list of BC venture capitalists, angel investors, investment funds, and networking functions that are focused on investing in early stage companies. Do your due diligence and properly prepare your idea and presentation before contacting a potential investor.

W Media Ventures – Invests in early-stage companies in the fields of digital media, e-commerce, and social networks.

WUTIF – Western Universities Technology Innovation Fund (WUTIF) will invest up to a maximum of $200,000. Typical investments are in the $50K to $100K range. 

SDTC Fund – Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) supports clean technology projects without taking an equity stake and without requiring ownership of intellectual property. Their $550M SD Tech Fund supports clean tech businesses and their $500M NextGen Biofuels Fund supports the development of biofuel solutions.

Ventures West – A venture capitalist company that primarily invests in early stage companies. Previously invested in clean tech, biotech, IT, and communication companies.

Pangaea Ventures -  A venture capital firm that invests in early stage advanced materials, energy and environmental technology companies.

BC Discovery Fund – Invests in early stage technology companies beyond the start-up phase. They look for businesses that have an outstanding management team, an innovative technology or product, a clear competitive advantage, a business plan, and strategic partners.

Centre for Drug Research & Development – The CDRD offers support to drug researchers seeking grant funding for their approved drug research projects. The CDRD provides facilities and expertise to develop drug discoveries for commercialization. 

Genome BC – Genome British Columbia is a non-profit research organization that invests in and manages large-scale genomics and proteomics research projects. Genome BC focuses on areas such as human health, forestry, fisheries, bioenergy, mining, agriculture and the environment.

VANTEC – An exclusive invite-only monthly gathering of angel investors. Early stage technology entrepreneurs invited to attend the meetings give 20 minute pitches to potential investors. Typical investments are between $25K – $100K. 

Okanagan Angel Network – An exclusive invite-only monthly gathering of angel investors. Early stage technology entrepreneurs invited to attend the meetings give 20 minute pitches to potential investors. Typical investments are between $25K – $100K.

Angel Forum – This event allows private equity investors to interact with companies seeking equity financing between $100K to $1 million. Companies pre-selected will deliver a 20 minute presentation and will have the opportunity to showcase their products/services during networking breaks.
